Oregon Sheriff Billed $43,000
The three year court battle between Medford Oregon newspaper, The Mail Tribune and Jackson County Sheriff Mike Winters, has resulted in Winters being ordered to pay roughly $44,000 in legal expenses for trying to protect the privacy of law-abiding Oregonians with concealed handgun licenses.
The fees include around $20,670 in legal fees billed by the newspaper, and about $23,800 incurred by the county.
The newspaper claimed they wanted the records to determine how many teachers in Jackson county were licensed to carry a concealed handgun, after a case in which a South Medford high school teacher sued the county for the right to carry on school property. Her case was dismissed.
The county has yet to turn over the records, but they are working up an estimate, which could run into thousands of dollars.
