Know Your Neighbors With Public Records
Knowing even a little about your neighbors can be extremely helpful to keeping yourself and your family safe from known criminals and predators. Many people nowadays don’t want anything to do with their next door neighbors, including my own. I’ve always been the neighborly type, but the days of the welcome wagon seem to be gone.
If someone suspicious looking moves in to my neighborhood, I want to know something about their past history, as cases of sex offenses and drug use increase. Finding their name can be the tricky part, but once you get their name, it’s fairly simple to get any public records that are in the information databases. A reverse address search can also be useful.
Phillip Garrido, the “man” who kidnapped and repeatedly raped Jaycee Lee Dugard, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison in 1977 for the kidnapping and rape of a 25 year old casino worker, only serving 11 years before being released on parole. Three years later he committed the crimes against Miss Dugan, who was then only 11 years old.
I’m thinking that Garrido’s neighbors must have been blind or brain-dead to not realize that something suspicious was going on. Public records can be extremely useful for preventing this type of tragedy. I shudder to think about how many other women and children have been victimized by Garrido and others like him.
